Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Disaster risk management (DRM) is a critical component of sustainable development, particularly in regions vulnerable to natural and human-made disasters. Jalingo Local Government Area in Taraba State has experienced recurring disasters such as floods, landslides, and communal conflicts, which disrupt livelihoods and claim lives. Community-based disaster risk management (CBDRM) emphasizes grassroots participation, ensuring that communities are adequately informed, prepared, and resilient. Radio, with its wide reach and accessibility, serves as a vital communication tool in disseminating timely information, raising awareness, and mobilizing community action. According to Yusuf and Ibrahim (2023), radio can foster collective action and enhance local capacity by providing culturally relevant and practical disaster preparedness information. However, the extent of its influence on CBDRM in Jalingo has not been adequately explored, necessitating focused research to determine its role and effectiveness in this context.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing frequency and impact of disasters in Jalingo, community preparedness and response remain inadequate. Although radio is a primary source of information for many residents, its influence on community-based disaster risk management remains unclear. Challenges such as inconsistent messaging, low listener engagement, and limited integration of local perspectives may hinder its impact. Without empirical evidence on its role, leveraging radio as a tool for DRM in Jalingo may fall short of achieving its potential.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To examine the role of radio in raising awareness about disaster risks in Jalingo.
To assess the influence of radio on community participation in disaster preparedness activities in Jalingo.
To identify the challenges faced in using radio for community-based disaster risk management in Jalingo.
1.4 Research Questions
What role does radio play in raising awareness about disaster risks in Jalingo?
How does radio influence community participation in disaster preparedness activities in Jalingo?
What challenges hinder the effectiveness of radio in community-based disaster risk management in Jalingo?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Radio significantly raises awareness about disaster risks in Jalingo.
Radio positively influences community participation in disaster preparedness activities in Jalingo.
Significant challenges limit the effectiveness of radio in community-based disaster risk management in Jalingo.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for disaster management agencies, broadcasters, and community leaders seeking to enhance resilience in Jalingo. It provides evidence-based insights into the potential of radio to drive effective DRM strategies, enabling stakeholders to design targeted and impactful communication campaigns. Policymakers can use the findings to integrate radio into broader disaster risk reduction frameworks, while academics can benefit from new knowledge on media and disaster communication.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Jalingo Local Government Area in Taraba State, examining the influence of radio on community-based disaster risk management. It excludes other media platforms and regions outside Jalingo.
